Mary – 10-11-15 NC Trip –Galax, VA & Mt Airy, NC

Today’s outing was to Mt Airy, NC. It was settled in the 1750’s as a stagecoach stop between Galax, VA and Winston-Salem, NC.

It’s probably better known as “Mayberry”, as it’s where Andy Griffith was born and is believed to be the basis of the TV show. Many stores and businesses take the name “Mayberry”, rather than Mt Airy.

We had done a little research and knew there were some neat photo opportunities there – statues, old cars and buildings, businesses named after ones from the TV show, etc. and were looking forward to add to our album. Alas, it was time for their annual “Mayberry Days” celebrations. People filled the streets, parking was hard to find, and some of the places we wanted to photograph, we couldn’t even get to. So, pictures were fairly few and far between. We did get out and mix it up with the crowd on the main street though for a short while.

After that, we headed back to the campground toward the Blue Ridge Parkway.
